The Blue Lake Elementary KidsZone program consists of 37 students in Grades 3 – 5. There are also nine Blue Lake Elementary teachers/administrators that are partnered with these students to serve as their mentors. The Blue Lake Elementary KidsZone group meets afterschool on Wednesday Early Release Days from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and also goes on off-campus field trips on Teacher Inservice Days when the students do not have school. During these after-school sessions and off-campus field trips, learning opportunities are provided to build multi-disciplinary background knowledge and experiences that will enhance the students’ acquisition of Math, Science, English & Language Arts, Social Emotional Development and Civic Awareness.
During the 2019 – 2020 school year, off campus field trips to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, the Reptile Discovery Center in Deland, and the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet have provided the KidsZone students opportunities to visit destinations they have never been able to attend before. A strong focus is placed on the improvement of school attendance and behavior since there is a strong correlation between these social emotional factors and academic performance. Food distribution, with both perishable and non-perishable food, is provided through Food Brings Hope to the Blue Lake Elementary KidsZone students on a weekly basis.
The main goal of the Blue Lake Elementary KidsZone program is for the adult teacher mentors to encourage and support the KidsZone students’ academic and social/emotional development so these students can development and prosper into their best self.
