Students from Teen Zone received living history lessons when they visit the Halifax Historical Museum in Daytona Beach. The students participated in "Journey through Day Town," a special educational program presented by the Halifax Historical Society Museum which takes children from elementary schools through high schools on a living history tour of their own history.
The tour, given after school, in the museum, starts with a 20 minute movie covering 130,000 years of local history. The museum's displays show local artifacts from the eastern Volusia County area. Re-enactors cover the next step of the journey by telling stories of our early pioneers. The museum is housed in the old Merchants Bank building located in the beautiful historic downtown Daytona Beach and is over 100 years old.
Local history gives the students a new sense of identity and a new connection to where they live. The program is as much fun as it is informative.
