McInnis Elementary School Kids Zone mission is to provide our students with experiences that will help them to discover their full potential and will help them to become good citizens. Our program focuses on developing cultural awareness and critical thinking in our students by providing different activities and experiences that engage them in developing positive character traits. We have 30 students in our program from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Our meetings days are every other Tuesday and every other Friday, and we provide snacks to our students. In our meetings we provide tutoring, help with homework, and engage students in different activities such as table manners activities, presentations, team games, and creating experiences to help them to explore different topics related to our society. These experiences will help them to increase their cultural awareness and make direct connections between those themes and their lives to develop a true understanding of the concept. As we did last year, this year we will have speakers coming to our meetings to engage our students in different activities to increase critical thinking. As part of our enrichment activities and field trips, we had gone to the DeLeon Springs State Park, The Athens Theatre to see the musical Seussical, and to Bethune Cookman University to celebrate the African American Heritage month. We also celebrated the Hispanic Heritage Month with a little presentation about diversity. We also have scheduled field trips to Skyzone, Smooth Waters and Daytona Museum of Arts. We engaged our students in community service activities. Last year we participated in a community service project where we collected coins for The Neighborhood Center in Deland. This year our kids were invited by the DeLeon Springs State Park to participate in a beautification project. We are waiting for the approval from the park to start the project. This will be our community service project for this school year.
