Mary Cortez, VCan2020 Director

Mary Cortez, VCan2020 Director, was raised in Volusia County and is a graduate of Stetson University. Mary started her career as a Volusia County Schools teacher where she was introduced to Food Brings Hope as one of the first Teen Zone sponsors at Hinson Middle School.

Mary transitioned into the field of social work in 2009 and holds a Department of Children’s and Families child welfare certification.

In 2014 Mary established a school for youth in foster care at the FL United Methodist Children’s Home. Mary advocated for social emotional learning for youth who have experience trauma and in 2015, the school became a Volusia County Schools contracted-site.

Mary has a passion for education and advocating for children and youth.

Mary joined the Food Brings Hope team in January 2019 to launch the VCan2020 initiative to help end hunger and homelessness for children and youth in Volusia County.
