Sunrise Elementary calls its KidsZone and FBHonors programs Project H.E.A.T. . It stands for Helping Everyone Achieve Together. It is a mentoring program that assists students/ teachers/ and parents in both behavior and academic areas. It is meant for those students who may need that little extra "push" or additional encouragement.
It is designed to support students that have various needs for increasing improvement in academic areas, independent functioning skills, and create life-long learners for our 21st century leaders.
Currently, we have 18 male students, mostly Hispanic, in our program. We meet twice a month on Monday afternoons for 1 hour. We provide a healthy snack and drink during the meeting.
Our theme this year has revolved around “Oceans.” Through labs, short videos, and a simple lesson plan, we have implemented the importance of a healthy ocean environment, effects of pollution, and sea life preservation. We recently paid a visit to the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach where we learned to classify sea life into groups, feed fish, and take a hike around the center to learn about the sea animals living in the center.
To end this school year, our Project Heat club will be paying a visit to Sea World Orlando and experience hands on sea life and the importance our oceans provide the Earth.
